How Shall We Stand?
It is March 27, 2013. The Supreme Court of the United States is hearing arguments concerning Proposition 8 and DOMA (Defense Of Marriage Act). Proposition 8 was a California referendum on a state constitutional amendment that defined marriage as between a man and a woman. It was passed by a 52% - 48% margin, with the majority of "no" votes coming, not surprisingly, from the urban areas of the state. This proposition was overturned by one gay judge in 2010.
DOMA was passed in 1996. According to Wikipedia: "The law passed both houses of Congress by large majorities and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on September 21, 1996. Under the law, no U. S. State or political subdivision is required to recognize a same sex marriage from another state. Section 3 of DOMA codifies the non-recognition of same sex marriages for all federal purposes, including insurance benefits for government employees, Social Security survivors' benefits, immigration, and the filing of joint tax returns."
The battle lines have been drawn and there really is no place of compromise. The federal government will either recognize the validity of same sex marriages or deny it. The two sides are firmly entrenched and there will be no prisoners taken.
While some see this as a confrontation between two political and social philosophies, it really is a battle between good and evil that has been going on for millennia. God's Word tells us we were created in His image and are beings of a tripartite nature consisting of body, soul and spirit. This nature reflects the triune God. He gave our first parents dominion over all creation, which they relinquished when they chose to disobey Him. While man is still the predominant life form on this planet we are now subject to the forces of nature and the elements and the consequences of sin. That does not diminish who we are. God so loved His creation that He sent His only begotten son Jesus to pay the price and take the penalty for our transgression. Mankind is the crown of God's creation.
When godlessness prevails, however, unregenerate man expresses his dominion in defiance of the precepts of the Holy One. We have now determined that the method of propagation that God ordained for all of nature is not applicable to us. "Male and female created He them..." While all of life progresses based on the foundation of male/female in one way or another, man has determined that that is not applicable or necessary for human kind. Essentially we have placed ourselves on the throne of God to determine that what we want and what best meets our sensuous needs overrides the commands of God. Adam and Eve did the same thing in the Garden of Eden. Things haven't changed much.
The current argument of the LGBT crowd is that "I was born this way." In a sense that is correct. I was a born fornicator, adulterer, sorcerer, liar, and any other sin you can mention. Before I knew and received God's gift of salvation I was the chief of sinners. Everything I did was geared to satisfy me. We were all born with a sinful nature. Homosexuality is no worse than lying, gossip, stealing, and any other sin mentioned in the scriptures. They are all an abomination to God.
Those in favor of same sex marriage see the opponents as narrow minded "haters" that have nothing better to do than pick on people who disagree with them. There are those who are like that and in the name of Jesus spew hatred, but are not representing Jesus as he bid them to do so. Most who oppose same sex marriage do so because God says it's wrong.
When a society determines that belief in God is a personal decision and not necessary for the orderly existence of a nation then all restraint is cast off and any sin is allowed and even condoned. Just a few decades ago homosexuality was seen as a mental illness. Now it is viewed almost as a desirable alternative to the traditional family relationship. The entertainment industry has been the bully pulpit for those who believe this. (Modern Family, The New Normal, etc.)
Instead of restraining ourselves from sin we are encouraged by the ones who control public opinion to practice it. This not only applies to homosexuality, but adultery and fornication and sin of all kinds. It comes from Hollywood and it comes from Washington, D.C. It comes from politicians, pimps and preachers. What was once recognized as unacceptable is now looked upon as desirable. We have called good evil, and evil good. The Old Testament prophet Zephaniah said:
"Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city! She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God. Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow. Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law." (Zeph. 3:1-4)
Will the Supreme Court make the right decision? Probably not. What once was designed as the third power of our government to interpret the constitution has become a legislative body of public opinion whose decisions are irreversible. Look at some of the decisions of our high court. They made prayer in our schools illegal God a trespasser on public grounds. The legalization of abortion at the whim of convenience was a futher affront to the giver of life. Those two decisions alone have brought the hand of judgment upon this nation and we are seeing and will continue to reap the consequences. Will this one be any different? Probably not.
As Christians we should pray for those who have been caught up in sin. Not just the gay/lesbian crowd, but the adulterers, the fornicators, the liars, the gossips, the preachers who have forsaken the calling to moral leadership, and on and on. We were all created in the image of God.
Pray for our nation. It may very well be that we have gone beyond the point of no return. As our nation continues to reject the Almighty and turn to it's own wickedness we must be firm and determined that we will serve the Lord. It will become less and less popular to be a believer in God's Word. We might as well make up our minds that we will not give in to the pressures and temptations of a fallen culture. How are we to face the current situation? The Apostle Peter had something to say about that:
"But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear..." (1 Pet. 3:14-15)
"Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God." (1 Pet. 4:1)
When you see and hear all the rhetoric don't get angry. Pray for them. When you see them carrying signs promoting sinfulness pray for them. When you see them parading through your streets proclaiming their "pride" don't look upon them with disgust, but pray for them. Pray that the Holy Spirit would open their eyes and that they would repent and call on the name of the Lord! If you're saved today someone prayed for you.
